Three Capes

Well, really only two capes because of road construction. I was on the Oregon Coast this weekend for two days of bike riding under glorious weather.

Today I spent the afternoon riding the Three Capes Scenic Route. I started in Tillamook and rode south along the edge of Tillamook Bay, riding my intended loop counter clockwise. It became obvious quickly that today would only be a two capes ride. The road over Cape Meares was closed by construction. Too bad, the lighthouse on the Cape is always worth a stop and the view from there is outstanding. After a little sojourn along Tillamook Bay for the view I returned to the main road detour and saved a few miles, and a bit of climbing. I worked my way around the shore of Netarts Bay then began the biggest climb of the day, Cape Lookout. The climb isn't all that bad, but the road is really deteriorating. Potholes and cracks in the asphalt from the roadbed sloughing off abound and they are hard to see in the mottled shade. Climbing not so bad, but it really complicates the descent. Hopefully the road gets repaired in the not too distant future. It is signed as the Oregon Coast Bike Route, so hopefully there is some impetus to keep it safe for biking.

The third cape of the day hardly counts. Cape Kiwanda at Pacific City is barely noticeable as a climb on the bike, more like a run of the mill hill. But Haystack Rock is always worth a photo.




I reached Pacific City, stopped for a snack, then headed inland for the return leg of my loop. There was a north wind so I was lucky that I rode counter clockwise. I had more shelter from the wind amongst the trees.

The weather was comfortable, in the mid 60's. There was a high overcast, but no rain. Later in the day the cloud cover burned off to reveal a nice blue sky.
