Today I was a World Ultra Cycling Association (WUCA) official for U.K. resident Peter Horton as he challenged the 100k, 100mile, 200k, and 6 hour world records. The WUCA oversees record attempts, and seems to try to set records for volume of paperwork. I printed off over 100 pages of documents that needed to be filled out. Peter chose to challenge the records on a course near Lumberton, North Carolina. The recent hurricane really raised havoc. It started out with our planned hotel being closed because of flooding and wind damage. It looked like a war zone there. We moved just across the South Carolina border to find alternate lodging. WUCA records are required to be challenged on certified and surveyed courses. The recent hurricane made riding the approved course impossible, a bridge was out due to the footings being undermined by the heavy rains and storm surge. We were lucky enough to find another surveyed course within driving distance. WUCA approved our request to use that course instead. The weather was warm (85F) and humidity high (80%) with afternoon thunderstorms so we started out 15 minutes before sunrise, in hopes of being finished before weather would be a major issue.
Peter was successful in setting all four records that he was challenging. Congratulations to him!
