Riding for Beer

Well, really I rode my bike to my volunteer duties as a bike parking attendant at the Oregon Organic Brewer's Festival.  I started from Riverside Park in Sellwood and biked to Overlook Park.

After parking bikes I rode back to Riverside Park.

Thursday!

It is Thursday once again, and time for the Thursday Night Ride!
I started from Riverside Park in Sellwood and rode in.
The meeting point is the Salmon Street Springs fountain.
.

It wasn't hard to determine if I had found the right group.

Tonight  we even had a guy show up with a cargo bike that was converted to a mobile sound system with enough power and ground pounding  bass to echo off the buildings for the duration of our ride.

I guess when I showed up on my fixed gear bike I was mistaken for one of the cool kids.  I was handed an invitation to an alley cat race.

We pedaled around town for a couple of hours, taking the lane, and the whole street when necessary.  We were met with more high fives than single digits.

We ended up at Poet's Beach where the obligatory camp fire was created and adult beverages consumed.

The new Tillicum Crossing bridge is not yet officially open, so I backtracked to the Hawthorne Bridge to get back across the Willamette River.

I rode the Eastbank Esplanade and Springwater Trail back to Riverside Park. I stopped as I passed the east end of Tillicum Crossing where I could see campfire of my fellow peddlers across the river.

It was a great night to be on a bike.

Meteors

The Comet Swift-Tuttle orbits around  our sun about once every 132 years, leaving a field of debris as it goes.  Far from complaining about the detritus we celebrate it as The Perseid Meteor Shower as it enters our atmosphere.  Today was predicted to be the height of meteor activity, approaching 60 per hour, and Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) sponsored a  "Star Party" at Rooster Rock State Park.  Rooster Rock SP is about 25 miles outside of Portland, in the Columbia Gorge.  Reasonably distant from city lights, but at low elevation.
Large crowds were expected and people were advised to arrive early.

I arrived early afternoon and staked out a parking space, and was the second blanket on the grassy  knoll, (though not THAT grassy knoll!)

I hoped on the fixed gear bike and wandered around.

It was going to be a good evening for star gazing, it would be warm and clear.

 By 7PM folks started arriving.

By dark (10PM) there were over 1000 people there.

We never did see 60 per hour, but probably 20/hr.  The low elevation meant we had to look through a lot of atmosphere.  In past years I've been at 7000 feet of elevation in the Three Sisters Wilderness Area and you can see a lot more meteors and stars there!

One bonus tonight was seeing the International Space Station pass by.

A (Hagg) Lake Loop

Among my Seattle friends when discussing a "Lake Loop" it usually refers to a lap around Lake Washington.  Around these parts it more than often refers to a lap around Henry Hagg Lake. The lap around Lake Washington is about 50 miles, the Hagg Lake lap is 10, but both have about 1000 ft of climbing.

I had business to attend to in Forest Grove today, but would have some time.  I brought the fixie.  I drove out to the Lake Stop Store and started from there.

I rode counter clockwise, as I normally do.  Usually it is to avoid a high speed descent past traffic that is supposed to stop, but with descending at speed in mottled shade, and possibly impaired drivers after a day on the lake, may not.  Today it was also to avoid a long descent on the fixed gear.  Up hills can be hard on a fixed gear bike, but down hills is worse!

The lake is low, as is to be expected this year. There were a few light clouds, but the weather was near perfect.

With  my start at the Lake Stop Store and subsequent "commute" to and from the lake, I ended up with just under 16 miles.

A dinner ride

It was a gorgeous day for a ride.  After a weekend of biking and camping I had chores to attend to, but by dinner time I decided I had earned a reward.

I rode the fixie into town for teriyaki!

Two miles!

Diamond Lake

Today 4 of us rode around Diamond Lake.  We thought it would be a perfect way to unwind after  yesterday's challenge.  The  breeze that directed the smoke away from Crater Lake pushed it into Diamond Lake. It wasn't so thick as to  impact breathing or make our eyes water, but it did impact views.

Some scattered high clouds had come in during the night, and had helped keep temperatures up.  I pedaled out with shorts and a long sleeved cotton t-shirt, hardly race attire, but this was hardly a  race!

Mt Bailey

Mt Thielson

Two had already left for home by the time the 4 of us finished our lap around Diamond Lake at 10:30 AM.  2 others decided that an earlier start on the 3.5 hour drive home sounded good and decided to forgo the traditional event closing lunch at Diamond Lake Resort.  John was carpooling with me, and we decided that with just two of us, that paying resort prices for a sandwich and chips didn't sound necessary, so we too started down the road.

With the over 50% cancellation rate,  lack of interest in a Saturday night potluck, and skipping the lunch at Diamond Lake Resort, this was a different event than in past years.  It was still fun!   It was work for me, and for a couple of the other attendees, but  Type II fun is still fun!

Crater Lake

Today 6 of us rode from Diamond Lake 15 miles and up nearly 3000 ft to Crater Lake, then rode around the lake for 32 miles (with 3900 ft of elevation gain) then back down to Diamond Lake.  It is an annual ritual for me.

As we rode away from Diamond Lake smoke from nearby forest fires hung heavy in the air.  I was fearing that we might have a repeat of the last two years when heavy smoke impacted views at Crater Lake, two years ago so much so that we couldn't even see Wizard Island.  Luckily that was not the case this year. There was still smoke, but the bulk of it was in a wind blown stream to the west.

It was a cold morning as we pedaled out at 9AM, but within 5 miles the sun and elevation gain had warmed us up enough that we stopped to adjust clothing.

Depending on who was doing the describing, our 15 miles up to Crater Lake was either "consistent" or "relentless". We just kept pedaling along.

Note the band of smoke in the distance
We never go to Crater Lake to race, we go for the scenery. It is a 63 mile route that we plan on taking most of the day to cover.

There were plenty of opportunities to stop to take a photo (or rest!)

The wind helped direct the smoke away, but also put ripples on the lake keeping the famous reflections at bay.

Our traditional lunch stop stretched from the usual 30 minutes to 90 when the trip leader (me!) told folks we'd be stopping at the lodge for lunch.  The parking lot is a maze of paths, trails, and quazi-roadways. The group said "you lead".  I did, but you really aren't leading if nobody follows. ;-)  I stopped at the cafe (hey, it's all the lodge to me!) John rode by and waved.  I ordered a turkey and swiss sandwich along with a chocolate milk.  I was wondering where the others were, and just as I was finishing my lunch, Paul rode up and said "we are all at the lodge". I told him I'd be right there.
Within a minute I had unlocked my bike and we pedaling toward the lodge.  The Crater Lake Lodge is a rambling structure and I couldn't find them there, or even find their bikes parked outside.

Cell service is very spotty, but after 30 minutes of looking for them I decided that it was time to roll. I sent a text to the rest saying that I'd meet them at the Phantom Ship overlook, about 8 miles down the road. I pedaled back through the parking lot, and as I rode past the cafe, there they were! Our group reunited, we spent another 30 minutes there as the others ate lunch.

Fully fed and hydrated we rolled out.  The route from the Lodge (area!) begins down a steep and twisty descent.  I may not be able to climb like a racer anymore, but I can almost descend like one! At the bottom of the descent there is a left turn to continue around Crater Lake, rather than continue to Medford. I waited for my partners, not wanting to lose them again.  I waited for a surprising amount of time.

The east rim has several large climbs where the road drops down into the former side canyons of Mt Mazama, and then climbs back up out of them.

A few mumblings of discontent were heard from some riders as we made our way up the long slogs.
This would be a Type II Fun day. ;-)

At the tops of the climbs we'd be rewarded with a good view.

Earlier in our trip as we approached the rim of the caldera, we saw signs warning of construction for the next 6 miles.  We noted that vehicles going clockwise around were leaving a trail of dust in their wake.  Gravel!  Yikes!

With about 5 miles left to go to get around, we came upon gravel. Luckily for us, rather than 5 miles of continuous gravel it was two sections, probably totaling 1 mile.  The first section was easy enough to ride on our narrow tires, but was very dusty.  At times the dust was so thick that I'd pull off and wait for it to clear because I was concerned about my visibility to cars.

The second stretch was on the descent to our turn back to Diamond Lake.  This wasn't as dusty, but was more tricky to ride as the gravel was deep and loose.  I rolled down the hill with back brakes on, and one foot unclipped.

We regrouped as we completed our circuit of Crater Lake. As we had done most of the day, we put jackets on before the long descent then rolled out.

I rolled down the long descent in the low 40's with my jacket fluttering in the wind.  In my mirror I could see John catching up with me.  I've only been passed on a descent once before and got in to a tighter tuck to keep it from happening again.  John is a big boy and gravity is his friend.  He caught up with me!  We rolled side by side for a bit then I sat up and fell back.  I like the full lane for maneuvering when at speed and was uncomfortable being relegated to half a lane.

In time we all covered the 15 miles back to Diamond Lake (with two taking a wrong turn and enjoying 7 bonus miles!).

Showers were taken, food was eaten, stories were told.

Twiddling my thumbs

I organize a two day camping and biking weekend at Crater Lake every year.  This year I had 14 folks signed up.  We leave today.  In the last week people have been dropping like flies.  By 9 am I was down to 5.  One of them is riding with me for the last 220 miles,  and he is running late.  I took the new found free time to ride the fixie to lunch.  3 miles. Now nothing left to do but wait.

Thursday again

I started off with a ride to town for  some supplies for this weekend's camping/biking  trip. When the evening rolled around it was time to once again join folks on the weekly Thursday Night Ride.  I drove to Sellwood, then rode the rest of the way in.  The ride starts from Salmon Street Springs.

The weather was perfect and the turnout was good. Well over 100 people tonight.
 We were all having fun.

Within  an hour the sun had set.

It's amazing what  a new handlebar tape job will do.  There are a lot of very nice bikes at this ride.  Not  as in carbon wonderbikes, but as in fixies, tall  bikes, stretch bikes, and fat tired bikes. Normally my fixie doesn't garner a second glance .  Tonight 3 different people commented on the "nice bike".  My handlebar tape was getting a bit ragged so I retaped it mid week.  Nothing like nice new red tape to gather attention!

We ended up on the banks of the Willamette River.  Did I mention that it was a perfect evening?
I didn't hang around long.  I've got some last minute preparations  to attend to before taking off for Crater Lake tomorrow morning.  I  bid the gang farewell and pedaled back  along the  Eastbank Esplanade and  Springwater Corridor to Sellwood where I had parked earlier in the evening.

It was a nice evening for  a  ride.

Raging Waters

Today a loosely organized group calling themselves "Portland Bike Party" planned to ride to multiple fountains and cool off from the 100 degree temperatures.  They dubbed their ride "Raging Waters".
The group was more mainstream than the Thursday Night Ride that I've been attending.  There wasn't a tall bike to be seen! ;-) While there wasn't the variety of bikes tonight, there was no doubt that these people were bikey.

Bill and Tess were there.

Tess was on my soggy birthday ride in February.  Today would be soggy as well, but only because we'd be splashing around in fountains.

We pedaled along slowly and given that the fountains would be packed with kids on this very warm evening, we sent an advance party to warn parents that we were on our way.  The kids loved us..... we brought water toys!

Some of us splashed around in the water, some just watched.

After 10-15 minutes we'd ride to the next fountain.

The fountain at the Moda Center was just trickling, likely turned off for the evening.

I took the time to stop as we crossed the Broadway Bridge to get this photo. I knew I could catch back up with the group and didn't want to miss the photo opportunity.

We had one more fountain to visit yet.

The group was going to wrap up at a pizza place, but I said my good byes and rode back to Lloyd Center, where our ride had began, and my pickup was parked.

With the 5 miles I had biked earlier in the day the daily total was 18 miles.
